 | East African Community to approve 11 cassava,potato standards - 38.15 KB
Standards for cassava and potato products in the five East African Community countries have been recommended for approval for implementation.
The process towards regional root crops standards, focusing on cassava and sweet potato, was spearheaded by the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) in 2006.
UNBS compiled a list of 14 standards, and using the EAC template, formally sent the proposal to the other four countries for consideration and adoption as regional standards. This proposal was tabled before the EAC Standards technical sub-committee and approved in November in Arusha, Tanzania.
The Association for Strengthening Agricultural Research in Eastern and Central Africa (ASARECA) at her vantage position as a sub-regional research organisation, supported technical departments of the Burundi Bureau of Standards (BBN), Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), Rwanda Bureau of Standards (RBS), Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) and UNBS to convene consultative workshops in the respective countries to discuss the zero drafts in November to December 2009. Conference/Workshop Materials (6) | Capacity Needs for Strengthening and Empowering Farmer Organisations in East and Central Africa - 1.68 MB 'Farmer empowerment for improved livelihoods' is one of the priority projects in the ASARECA Operational Plan to be implemented by the Upscaling and Knowledge Management Programme. This workshop is one of the preliminary activities of this project. Its overall objective was to determine the common critical needs for strengthening farmers' organizations (FOs) and farmer empowerment and to develop a concept note for a regional project that would address those needs. It was attended by representatives from national farmers' organizations in seven countries-Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya, Madagascar, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda; the Eastern African Farmers Federation (EAFF) as well national focal points on extension and farmer empowerment from several ECA countries and other actors in agricultural research, extension and training in the sub-region. |
 | Gender Mainstreaming priority setting workshop report - 1.85 MB
As a regional association, ASARECA faces challenges that transcend national boundaries and yet are committed to serving a population of over 280 million people by finding research solutions to trans-boundary problems which ensure spillovers across national boundaries and sharing of benefits and costs of collective action. This calls for understanding of the social dynamics that influence peoples choices in agriculture/livelihoods. Cognizant of the impact of these interactions on setting of the research agenda, ASARECA embraced gender equality as a vital consideration in agricultural production and embarked on the gender mainstreaming in the organization as early as year 2001. After three initiatives, the lessons learnt indicated the need for a methodical process of gender mainstreaming.
The Gender Mainstreaming Strategy marks the beginning of the systematic integration of gender into the programmes, policies and activities of ASARECA. The principal purpose of mainstreaming gender in ASARECA is to contribute to the achievement of the organizations mission, ‘to enhance regional collective action in agricultural research for development, extension and agricultural training and education to promote economic growth, fight poverty, eradicate hunger and enhance sustainable use of resources in Eastern and Central Africa’. |

For agricultural communities and agricultural stakeholders in Eastern and Central Africa (ECA) to adjust to climate change and the projected increases in temperature and in rainfall variability, their ability to cope better with the constraints and opportunities of the current climate must first be improved. Through this literature review, information will be made available on the current state of knowledge on the implications of current climate variability and future climate change on the agricultural sector within ECA.
This project is being implemented by the ILRI as part of the ASARECA funded project 'Managing uncertainty: innovation systems for coping with climate variability and change'. |
